Camden Fringe First Timers: The Trap

Trapdem.jpg The countdown to the Camden Fringe is well underway with 12 days to go. Woop! Still time to take a closer look at some of the first time fringers about to pop their Camden cherries so here are three funny blokes returning to fringe fun.

Who are you?

We are three-man comedy sketch show The Trap. We have been around since 2001 and we created five very successful Edinburgh shows between 2002 and 2006 along with several popular shows spoofing terrible student theatre under the title Bad Play. Our appearance at the Camden Fringe marks our first new live stage show for three years.

What are you doing, when and where?

We are performing The Trap 2009 Comeback Special at the Etcetera Theatre August 28th-30th at 7.30pm.

And why?

Since our last show in 2006, the spiralling costs of the Edinburgh Festival coupled with other acting and writing commitments meant that we were unable to get together and perform as a group. However, all three had a lot of material building up that we wanted to perform with each other so we created a new show at the beginning of the year and performed it over three nights. It turned out to be perhaps our best show yet. Now the Camden Fringe gives us a great platform to put it on as a viable alternative to the Edinburgh Festival and we are very much looking forward to our run at the Etcetera Theatre.

What are your hopes and fears for the Camden Fringe?

We hope that the Camden Fringe will provide comedians and performers like ourselves a genuine alternative to the Edinburgh Festival which has now become more like a trade fair than the 'Fringe Festival' it used to be. For all artists it is an extremely expensive place to put on a show and it takes us out of London for a whole month making it less viable year on year. At the same time, the Camden Fringe is growing each year and attracting more interesting and diverse shows than ever before and we hope this continues as a place we can annually premiere new shows.

As far as our fears go, our main fear is that the Camden Fringe gets eaten by, let's say a large land-based shark.
