The barbecue summer might have been wrongly prophecied but community spirit and the joy of summer holiday time is carrying the summer of local love through this weekend.

Croydon Summer Festival at Coombe Park on 1st and 2nd August and is apparently "London's best free festival". Judge for yourself with Saturday's World Party day, eclectically headlined by The Proclaimers, Candi Staton and Dreadzone while Sunday is the Croydon Mela featuring a bill full of Bhangra and Bangla. Bags of other stuff goes on around the 4 live stages, including street theatre, workshops, a world market and a village sports green. 1-8.30pm, both days, free.

On Sunday, Walworth turns into mini Brazil with Carnaval del Pueblo, the largest Latin American festival in Europe, celebrating Brazilian Day. Follow the procession from Elephant and Castle to Burgess Park and soak up the samba and salsa with full on Latin American partying between 10am-9pm.

If you're after something a little more artsy, Hackney Wicked Art Festival starts Friday night with open studios and galleries all over E9 with performance art and installations where you least expect them. Fete for the Wicked goes off on Saturday between midday and 10pm at Main Yard, Wallis Rd, Hackney Wick and to rival that, O-Fish-All - the Fish Island Community Street Party will be showcasing local musical talent, enjoying a barbecue (we hope), investigating a bar, books, zines, bric a brac, homemade stuff and even promise a mystery celebrity to open the festivities. Midday till 9pm.
