Things To Do With Your Mum This Weekend

Mother's Day rattles those of us who think our mums are pretty great, year round, but the key thing about this greeting card kind of day is that forgetting or ignoring it is not wise. We trawled the mumsie PR we'd received and threw most of it away (expensive afternoon teas and pampering spa sessions have their place, and it's not here) preferring instead to ask our Twitter followers for original, personal, quirky and economic ideas for what to do with your old dear this weekend. It's the thought that counts:

@PennyGolightly assures us that afternoon tea at Soho's Yauatcha is surprisingly cheap if you pick your tea leaves carefully. @andyjaeger recommends tea at the Wallace Collection which is smart as you'll have that marvellous treasure house to explore for free as well.

If you prefer to skip the whole ritual but keep the sweet bits, rifle through our past Just Dessert posts for some top cake and pudding places.

For practical, hearty and greenie mums, there's a big river clean up in Merton on Sunday between 11am-3pm. Get your wellies on together and head for the Wandle Trail where you can bond over waders, dank water and hard work then retire to the pub to get sauced with the others after.

@maggiebob suggests taking mum out on your own personal guided tour of the London sights. Which reminded us that some mums like a tipple and you could even try one of our Alternative Pub Crawls.

Take artsy mama to the Affordable Art Fair with 2:1 entry from @whatsonwhen.

Surprise fashionable mummy with a £3 ticket to the Vintage Fashion Fair at Cecil Sharp House, between 11am-5pm. You'll be handy for Regents Park and Primrose Hill for pretty wanderings to show off your purchases too.

@rodengland reckons a trip down the river with a stop off for Sunday lunch does the trick every time but you know your mum really wants you to do the cooking. If you're taking up that challenge, why not walk it off round one of our Nature-ist spots?

Whatever you do, don't forget it. And feel free to offer more inspired ideas in the comments throughout the week or tweet @londonist.
