Camden Fringe Review: Iszi Lawrence

Iszi Lawrence
A double dose of Friday night stand up at Sheephaven Bay

It seems insane for Iszi "It's Spelled That Way" Lawrence to be playing a tiny and immeasurably hot room in the back of the Sheephaven Bay in Camden - her assured stage manner, posh earnestness and trademarkable electric-white hair all belong on a larger and way more air-conditioned stage.

Tales of her Christian housemate trying to convert her, falling out of a bath in front of a manky cat and trying to blag her way into a pub aged 14 are all effortlessly mingled with gags about her Catholic school upbringing and her thoughts on atheism, and she rolled with the punch of a weak heckle (more of an interruption, really) so naturally it could have been part of the script. There's no meandering or waffling, the few jokes that fall a little flat are skipped over without interrupting her stride, and the whole things zips along at 100mph. For someone finding her feet in stand-up, it's very impressive.

We can see her becoming big - and she's quite tall already - so suggest you catch one of the two remaining nights in Camden while the tickets are affordable and you can still high-five her after the show.
