Coming Soon...London Mapping Festival

'Festival' sounds like an inadequate word for an initiative lasting a year and a half. The London Mapping Festival, though, runs from June this year through to the end of 2012, and celebrates all things cartographic in the capital.

The full programme has yet to be announced, but will involve events aimed at professional map-makers, amateur enthusiasts and the public at large. Like the Story of London Festival, the initiative pulls together events that are happening anyway and adds plenty of new ones. Themes will include the history of mapping, modern cartography, geocaching, map fairs, and digital mapping.

The 18-month cavalcade was sparked by the British Cartographic Society, but several organisations are members of the steering committee. The festival also draws on a number of supporting organisations, of which Londonist is one. Well, we could hardly say no, given our obsession with all things mappy.

More on the festival when the programme is announced. You can follow them on Twitter here.
