Encounters: Art Meets Science At The British Library

The British Library has joined forces with its new(ish) neighbour — Central St Martin's — to put together an exhibition and season of events looking at the interface between science and art. Encounters, an exhibition inspired by the Library and its science collections, starts on 25 February and sees 15 works from St Martin's MA students dotted throughout the library's public spaces.

Pieces include a 'Cabinet of Cosmic Wonder', reinterpreted Medieval bestiaries, a sound installation reflecting on the way libraries are quiet yet contain many words, and photographs of the masonry of the City of London. This PDF gives more details, with each art work explained in refreshingly clear terms.

The exhibition is supported by a series of events (some free, some paid, all need prebooking).

  • 11 March: Five top scientists reflect on the role of luck and serendipity in research.
  • 15 March: Neuroscientists, artists, musicians, philosophers and ‘extreme puppeteers’ explore the origins of creativity.
  • 18 March: David Nutt talks about addiction and the nature of compulsion.
  • 19 March: Nigel Shadbolt looks at open data and how it could change society.
  • 22 March: The hardworking troupe behind Festival of the Spoken Nerd put on one of their inimitable shows.
