Talk: A Passion For Packaging

bovrilAnyone who's ever been to the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising in Notting Hill will know just how fascinating old packaging can be. Examining how Bisto labels have evolved over the decades, or re-encountering a long-forgotten childhood sweet wrapper are experiences that hit us hard in the nostalgia glands. An upcoming talk at one of London's other splendid small museums will pick through this valuable litter of recent generations.

Robert Opie began collecting the things other people throw away 50 years ago, and the 12,000 items of the collection now form the core of the Museum of Brands. To celebrate the half-centenary of his collection, Opie will speak at the Florence Nightingale Museum near St Thomas' Hospital on 17 October 2013. His talk will not only encompass the packaging of household goods, but also other aspects of the consumer story, such as toys and games, travel and transport, leisure and entertainment, magazines and newspapers, technology and fashion.

Tickets are £8, which includes a glass of wine and a look around the Florence Nightingale Museum. The talk is at 6.30pm on 17 October. To book, please contact Katie Edwards on katie@florence-nightingale.co.uk or 020 7620 0374.
