London At War: Events Through May

Screen Shot 2014-05-02 at 17.31.39As Jerry White remarks in his new book Zeppelin Nights, the words 'London' and 'War' tend to conjure images of the 1940-41 Blitz. But there are many other dimensions to the capital's 20th century wartime experience. A series of walks, talks and activities through May explore the city during the two world wars. It's put together by the Raphael Samuel History Centre and some of the museums, archives and galleries that make up its History and Heritage Adult Learning Network (HHALL).

The programme comprises 15 events, beginning on 7 May with a tour of the National Maritime Museum's War and Sea exhibition. The talks begin on 8 May when White gives a keynote on London in the Great War. Other highlights include a talks on sex in the wartime city (13 May), the Bethnal Green tube disaster (21 May), the role of London's animals in WWII (28 May) and a closing talk on Bloomsbury at war (3 June). You can also explore the war through workshops at places including London Metropolitan Archive and the Bishopsgate Institute.
