Dare You Take A Dip In The Docks?

**UPDATE: This event has been cancelled**

Ever looked at the murky waters of London's docks and wished you could take a dip? No, nor us, but for the super-keen swimmer, there's a chance to swim in Millwall Docks at the end of the month — and raise money for charity in the process.

The Great London Swim has seen the capital's hardiest swimmers take the plunge every year since 2009, for a mile-long course. This year, the venue is the Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre, at the western end of the dock. The route is an anti-clockwise lap of the L-shaped body of water, giving spectators chance to line the course cheering the hardy souls on.

This year's event sees the debut of a half-mile course for families, including children age 12 and up.  Swimmers of all abilities are welcome, but wetsuits are mandatory for anyone taking part in either course.

Registration is required to take part, with a fee of £31 for the half-mile, or £39 for the mile. There is also a chance to register to raise money for one of the official or supporting charities of the event. If you've got a bit of a competitive streak, why not take part as a team with colleagues or friends? We can't guarantee they'll thank you for it, but the fastest team gets their hands on an engraved trophy.

Great London Swim takes place on Saturday 30 August, with staggered swims from 9.30am. Register here.
