When ascending 311 steps, you're grateful for anything to take your mind off the challenge. So an adult storytelling event at The Monument is bound to be popular.

Stairwell Stories is led by professional storyteller Nell Phoenix, who will regale tales of the folklore of the City (and Wren's column itself) as the group makes the ascent. Fair play to her — we'd struggle to breathe and climb simultaneously, let alone spin a yarn for an eager audience as well.

In an added twist, the storytelling is 'silent'; guests are provided with silent disco-style headphones, through which the stories are broadcast, and NTS Radio are providing soundscapes to further animate the stories.

Once at the top, there's time to enjoy the views while you get your breath back.

Stairwell Stories takes place at The Monument on 12 March at 6.30pm. Tickets are £20 and need to be prebooked.
