A Whole Foods Restaurant For Dogs Is Coming To Bethnal Green This Weekend

The Canine Kitchen

It’s highly likely that 2015 will go down in history as the year the animals took over — at least in terms of our cafés, restaurants and bars.

Hot on the — furry, feathered and curly — tails of announced cat, owl and micropig projects, last month saw a City steak restaurant host a meaty brunch for dogs. This weekend London’s foodie fidos and hipster hounds are in for another treat, as holistic whole foods pop-up The Curious Canine Kitchen arrives for a two-day stint in Bethnal Green.

Fancy some textures of tripe?

Doggy diners will be served a five-course menu paired with matching drinks, to include textures of tripe with seaweed and kale purée, crispy paddywack with reishi mushrooms and flaxseed cream, and a coconut and blueberry chia pudding with gluten-free cinnamon quinoa dog biscuits. Drinks — all booze free — will include alkaline water, beef consommé and coconut water, while the meal will be rounded off with artisan marrowbones from Broadway Market butcher and restaurant Hill & Szrok along with herbal tea.

Included in the £20 per head ticket price is some similarly healthy food for the dogs’ owners. A ‘rawsome tasting menu’ will feature seven raw whole food amuse-bouche made with many of the same ingredients the hounds will be chowing down on. This will include gazpacho, a coconut and mango salad and an avocado, blueberry and chia cheesecake.

It remains to be seen — in both the human and dog worlds — whether such food can ever truly rival a sausage sandwich.

It is being laid on by spiritual dog trainer Natty Mason, who hopes the event will “inspire better doggie dinners across the UK”, as well as directly helping pooches further afield. All proceeds will go to Amazon CARES — an animal rescue shelter working with street cats and dogs in Iquitos, Peru — which Mason volunteers with. The region has a high number of strays, and this is the first local shelter to operate a no-kill policy.

The Curious Canine Kitchen runs on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April at One Studio, 1 Teesdale Street, E2 6GF. There are two sittings each day: 1-3pm and 3-5pm. Tickets can be bought on the event’s website.
