The science in Doctor Who isn't just nonsense about reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. Many of the storylines are based on real theories and actual events. Though we were terrified to discover, in the course of researching this article, that quantum physics means Weeping Angels could, potentially, exist. Run! Run for the hills! Without blinking!

If you'd like to find out more, head not for the hills but the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Author Simon Guerrier and Public Astronomer Dr Marek Kukula are there tonight (Friday 5 June) talking about ideas from their book The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who. Using clips from the programme, on the screens in the planetarium, they'll demonstrate how science is embedded into the plots and also how close it came to predicting future discoveries. Like? Well, time travel, parallel universes, Cybermen and regeneration.

Not bad for a telly show that started off being for kids, right?

The event is suitable for children 11 years and older. Oh, and there'll be a Dalek hanging around for extermination selfie purposes.

The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who is at Royal Observatory Greenwich on 5 June, 7pm-8.30pm. Tickets adult £8/concession £7/child £6/family £24.
