Week In Geek: 20-26 July 2015

Festival of the Spoken Nerd, see Wednesday.

London events for people with inquisitive minds.

Monday 20 July

ROMANS: Touch and talk about objects from a Roman public building discovered in Southwark Street in the 1980s, at the Museum of London. Free, just turn up, 12 noon

FEMINISM: A panel of very smart women at the British Library discuss what a Magna Carta for women would look like in 2015. £10, prebook, 6.30pm

Tuesday 21 July

BIOLOGICAL MANUFACTURING: Mike Sulu is a biochemical engineer. This week he is the guest at the Wellcome Collection Packed Lunch. Mike will discuss how biological processes can produce mass quantities of vaccines, anti-cancer drugs and other medicines. Free, just turn up, 1pm

CONCEPT ALBUM TALKS: Here's a weird concept. The organisers pick a concept album (starting with Dark Side of the Moon), then book talks for each track on the album. Speakers have to fit their talks to the length of their tracks, and must talk around the track title, without mentioning the track itself. It'll never work. Or will it? Find out at the Theodore Bullfrog pub near Charing Cross. Free, prebook, 6.30pm

GAMING: Go8Bit is a live video-gaming, comedy and tech experience. Bring a charged tablet or smart phone to participate in this interactive show at the Royal Institution. £8/£12, prebook, 7pm

SCIENCE SHOWOFF: Chaotic science, comedy and cabaret at the Star of Kings. The performers are all professional scientists, engineers and academics who don't get the attention they crave in their day jobs. Be warned, Londonist's most over-qualified work experience kid Sarah Bell is on the bill. Proceeds go to charity. £6, prebook, 7pm

Wednesday 22 July

GRAPHS: The very talented science comedy trio Festival of the Spoken Nerd are back in London with their new show Just for Graphs. Matt Parker, Steve Mould and Helen Arney will have you spinning on your axes at the Backyard Comedy Club in a double bill with excellent improv group Austentatious. £13, prebook, 7.30pm

Thursday 23 July

DIGITAL HUMANITIES: Is digital humanities the study of medieval poems about fingers? Probably not. Find out what it actually is at this introductory lecture by Dr Anouk Lang at Queen Mary University of London. Free, prebook, 5.30pm

Sleep with the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum

Friday 24 July

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: Sleep with the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum. It's cheaper than a night at the Dorchester. Adults only. £180, prebook, 6.30pm

Saturday 25 July

LONDON 2012: That sports carnival back in 2012, and the regeneration project that continues, have had quite an impact on Stratford and surrounding neighbourhoods. Join a Museum of London walk to find our more. £20, prebook, 10.30am

MUSEUM ARCHITECTURE: An architecture walk around the British Museum with Margaret O'Brien. Free, just turn up, 1.15pm

Sunday 26 July

See a Victorian sewage pump in action at Crossness.
See a Victorian sewage pump in action at Crossness Pumping Station on Sunday

STEAM: If you attend one geek event in London in your entire life, this should be it. Crossness Pumping Station is holding a steaming day. See one of their beautifully restored Victorian steam engines in action. These are the engines that pumped sewage out of central London, saving the city from its own filth. While you're there, check out their toilet museum. Sundays don't get much better. £6, just turn up, 10.30am-4pm

SYMBIOSIS: Part of the Shuffle Festival in Tower Hamlets Cemetary, this workshop explores how humans are morphing with our food and environment. Featuring biohackers, beer and the future of body augmentation. Free, prebook, 4pm
