Burger bromance

McDonald’s might have rejected the offer from Burger King to collaborate on a McWhopper, but two of London’s best burger brands have come together to create a joint burger in celebration of World Peace Day. Bleecker Burger and Lucky Chip have created a burger consisting of two beef patties (one from each), smoked bacon, American cheese, ketchup and mustard which will be available at The Old Queen’s Head in Islington for a week — that’s until 7 October.

Burger bargain

And there’s more burger action to be had next week; Byron will be selling its whole range for just 25p each on Tuesday. It’s part of a promotion to kick off their partnership with the One Feeds Two initiative, which will see them donate the price of a school meal to children in developing countries for every burger from the specials menu they sell. Back home, just sign up to the Byron club for free before 9am on Tuesday to claim your midweek bargainous burger.

Fine wine

Drinks trade magazine Harpers has revealed the winners of its annual wine awards, with several London venues scooping gongs. In the restaurant and bar rounds, City steak specialists M Restaurants won both best new opening and best sommelier while Hackney’s Sager + Wilde was named as having the best wine offering in a bar. In the retailer categories the winners were both Bottle Apostle, with branches in Crouch End, Victoria Park, Clapham, Stratford and Primrose Hill, and Borough Wines, with branches in Hackney, Stoke Newington, Dalston, Kensal Rise, Clerkenwell and Borough Market.

Chips away

Popular chippie Sutton & Sons (which we rate as one of our very favourite in London) has announced that it will open a third site next month, bringing its flaky fried fish to the good people of Islington. The new Essex Road site will open on 14 October, joining the original site in Stoke Newington and a more recent one in Shoreditch.

British art, British foodies

Following the latest Young British Foodies awards, the Rex Whistler restaurant at Tate Britain will be serving bespoke dishes created using supplies from winning producers. These will include cheeses from Wildes, olive oil cake from Wildflour Bakery and bourbon bacon jam from Billy Franks. There will also be two special events (on 10 and 16 October) when full Young British Foodies set menus will be served.

Theatre tipples

Mark Hix will open his first standalone Mark’s Bar next month at the Old Vic theatre in Waterloo. It follows two others in his Hix restaurant in Soho and his Hixter restaurant in Bankside. It will stay open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday and 1am Monday to Wednesday, and will serve a historical-themed cocktail list. A nice touch is that theatre-goers can order their pre-theatre and interval drinks in advance from a special ‘speedy menu’.

New openings

The past week’s new launches include a branch of cocktails and comfort food restaurant Dirty Bones in Kingly Court, heavy metal meets Turkish eatery Black Axe Mangal in Islington and the latest bar and restaurant from the Drake & Morgan group, this time an eponymous flagship in King’s Cross.

Today sees the arrival of fried chicken restaurant Bird — also known for its doughnuts — on Holloway Road, following the success of the original Shoreditch branch.

Next week’s openings include a permanent meatball restaurant from street food trader The Bowler in Covent Garden; Vietnamese barbecue restaurant CôBa in King’s Cross from the team behind supperclub Table for 10; neighbourhood Japanese eatery Wazen, also in King’s Cross; and Provençal restaurant Bandol in Chelsea from the same people who brought us Margaux near South Kensington.

We round up London’s biggest food and drink news stories and the latest new and upcoming restaurant openings in this handy digest every Thursday afternoon. See our previous editions.
