Wannabe whales and prospective penguins are needed to get their swim on and raise money for charity.

The Zoological Society of London — the charity behind London Zoo — is holding its first moonlit swimming challenge this summer. The Swim For Wildlife is an evening swimming challenge taking place in the, er, refreshing surrounds of Brockwell Lido.

Depending on the weather, the pool temperature will be somewhere between 12 and 19 degrees Celsius, meaning that wetsuits are very much the order of the day.

Participants have a choice of three distances: 750m, 1500m or 2000m, or for those who prefer to work in a pack, teams of four people can sign up for the 1000m relay.

Swimmers will be assigned a time slot between 7pm and 10pm depending on swimming competence. Throughout the evening, food and drink will be able to buy from the poolside barbecue and beach hut, and spectators can watch the action for a £5 ticket charge.

Sponsorship and ticket money raised will go towards ZSL's marine wildlife conservation projects, including the effects of plastic pollution on the Thames right here in London.

ZSL Swim For Wildlife takes place at Brockwell Lido on the evening of 23 August 2016. For further information or to sign up, visit the website.
