What Makes For A Good London Street?

That's the question being asked at the Building Centre, in a new exhibition all about designing a good place to live. Re/making The Street explores the balancing act between building the high-density housing that London so urgently needs while still making the streets a liveable, comfortable places for communities.

At the centre of the exhibition, visitors can walk through a scale model of Bonchurch Road, part of a regenerated housing estate in North Kensington. The model is used to examine some of the important issues facing city planners — how to provide low-cost housing in high-cost areas, how to deal with transport shortfalls, and the environmental concerns of building a new or regenerated street.

A series of five free talks will accompany the exhibition: Transforming post-War Estates, Designing for social inclusion, Does community consultation produce good design?, High density housing without the vertigo and How to make living streets.

Re/making The Streets is on at the Building Centre, 26 Store Street (Goodge Street tube) until 29 July. Entrance is free, and can be coupled with a look round the exhibitions of New London Architecture. Images courtesy of Juliana Vasquez.
