Elephant And Castle To Get A Pair Of Giant Tusks

The rising skyline of Elephant and Castle looks set to get two further additions. If approved this week, these residential towers will bring around 400 new homes to the area, plus restaurants, shops and an auditorium. Residents will enjoy the highest roof garden in the area.

The towers were 'revealed' today in the Evening Standard, though the plans from SOM architects have been available in the trade press since last year. The 146 metre towers will be almost exactly the same height as the nearby Strata tower — the maligned edifice that looks like an electric razor. The newcomers have been collectively dubbed the Toblerone Towers, thanks to the triangular shape, though we prefer The Tusks, given the location in Elephant.

By now, you won't be surprised to learn that none of the new homes are deemed 'affordable'. This is a tower block for rich people. However, developers London & Regional Properties will offer Southwark Council £16.88 million towards house building elsewhere, as well as making improvements to the nearby public realm.

The scheme would stand due north of the former main roundabout at E&C, replacing low-rise office block Skipton House, a homeless shelter and London South Bank University's library.

The scheme's planning application will be considered by Southwark Council this Tuesday. You can read much more detail in the this planning document, and explore local concerns in this forum thread.
