All Of London Will Be Reading This Novel

The Muse by Jessie Burton has been chosen as the novel for this year's Cityread London.

Cityread is like a giant book group. Every year, a novel set in the capital is chosen, then the whole city is invited to read it together. A series of imaginative events bring together readers to explore the themes of the book.

Cityread 2018 will also work with homeless charities to gift 800 signed copies of The Muse to homeless readers across the capital.

This year's novel travels from London to Andalucia and back again. Here's the blurb:

"It is a hot July day in 1967 London. Odelle Bastien, recently arrived from Trinidad, climbs the stone steps of the Skelton gallery to begin a job as a typist under the tutelage of the glamorous and enigmatic Marjorie Quick. But though Quick takes Odelle into her confidence, she remains a mystery – no more so than when a lost Spanish masterpiece with a secret history is delivered to the gallery."

This year's events will include a meet-the-author, life drawing classes in libraries, an exploration of Carribean music, family history workshops and an interactive audio digital installation at Idea Store Whitechapel. Full details will be published soon.

Cityread London takes place throughout May 2018, but you can get reading now. Follow them on Twitter @cityreadlondon and Facebook.
