Fancy Yourself As The Next Tim Burton? Join These Free Film Masterclasses

This is a sponsored article on behalf of London City Island.

If you've ever wanted to animate like Tim Burton, learn shot-by-shot what makes a great film or just fancy perfecting your Instagram stories, get yourself to a film masterclass at London City Island, London's latest cultural destination.

Floating on the Leamouth Peninsula with the glittering lights of Canary Wharf and the O2 in the distance, you'll feel like you've stepped onto the set of a very sleek sci-fi movie, making the island the perfect setting for this series of free film workshops taking place in September.

The classes are being hosted by developers EcoWorld Ballymore, in celebration of The London Film School's relocation to the island. It's set to open in 2018 with two cinemas, impressive studios and office spaces for its 220 students.

The London Film School isn't the only attraction drawing culture vultures to this 12-acre cultural hub. When it is completed next year, London City Island will offer waterside parks, bars, restaurants, art galleries and studios and boutique shops among the 1,700 new apartments. The English National Ballet and English National Ballet School is also moving its headquarters to the island next year. The Line, London’s first contemporary art walk, will also wind its way to the island.

So, what's in store for London's budding filmmakers?

Once you've crossed the 80-metre bridge over the River Lea, you'll be greeted with complimentary coffee and Italian pastries at the Island Grocer at 10am. A series of film experts will then lead three day-long sessions on stop animation, visual storytelling, and filmmaking with your phone, while each day the  Island Grocer will serve up complimentary pizza for lunch. The masterclasses, which will take part in and around London City Island, will finish around 4pm.

In this one-day workshop, you'll create your own plasticine characters and use animation to bring them to life with Tim's expert knowledge of figurine sculpting.

30 September — Visual Storytelling with Josh Appignanesi

These are some of the questions you can expect to find out the answers to at this workshop with director Josh Appignanesi, who'll lead you shot-by-shot into the heart of cinema through inspiring film examples and practical exercises.
