Pink Is The Theme Of This New Afternoon Tea Think Pink afternoon tea, Bluebird 4

Pink is the theme of this new afternoon tea, served at Bluebird in Chelsea.

We begin with the sandwiches; chicken, salmon and cucumber — standard afternoon tea fodder. Things liven up a bit with the scones — plain and fruit — whose shiny, brioche appearance belies their light and fluffy texture. The accompanying jam is a little too runny for somewhere as sophisticated as Bluebird (finger-licking is involved) but it does the job.

Really though, we're here for the sweet stuff, and it doesn't disappoint. Red velvet can be stodgy, but presented in Swiss roll form here, it's satisfying without being heavy handed. The highlight though, are the rose cupcakes. Rose is a tricky flavour to get right, teetering on that tightrope between wishy washy and overbearing — but it's spot on here. The macarons are a refreshingly fruity finish after all that sugar.

Bluebird's Think Pink afternoon tea is limited edition, available until Sunday 20 August. £1 from every booking goes to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.  The basic afternoon tea, with a pot of tea or coffee, is £22.50 — or pay extra and throw in a glass of wine of champagne, or a cocktail.
