What the new Nine Elms-Pimlico bridge could look like

Three possible locations have been revealed for the new Thames bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico.

The pedestrian and cycle bridge — planned since 2003 — will sit between the existing Vauxhall road bridge and the Battersea railway bridge into Victoria. It will improve connections across the Thames at the new Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station development, including the new US Embassy and the new Northern line extension stations.

The three locations being considered (shown above) are all close together, and link the area around Grosvenor Road in Pimlico to somewhere in Nine Elms. The most easterly option runs close to the US Embassy, while the most westerly is close to the Battersea Power Station development.

The design for the bridge has not yet been finalised, but current plans show a spiral ramp at each end, giving the bridge enough height to allow river and bankside traffic to continue unimpeded.A

A public consultation on the plans is now open, with exhibitions of the designs taking place across Wandsworth, Westminster and Lambeth on selected dates throughout November. An online questionnaire will be available on the Nine Elms Pimlico Bridge website from 5 November.

It is hoped that construction of the bridge will start in 2022.
