Imagine gatecrashing Dr Seuss's office party. That’s exactly what Seussical The Musical— co-conceived by Monty Python legend Eric Idle — feels like. The best-known characters are present, bursting with festivity and unleashed on the dance floor to a non-stop, high-energy soundtrack, from musical theatre, to big band and beyond.

Leading with popular children’s book Horton Hears a Who, and drawing on other much-loved stories, the mischievous Cat in a Hat (played by Marc Pickering) is supported by an energetic cast, to guide us through Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s mad-cap adventure, jam-packed with life lessons on love, friendship and being happy with who you are.

In a production that is as exhausting to watch as it must be to perform, there are times when this ambitious show feels as though it is going to burst the seams (and eardrums) of this usually cosy and sedate south London theatre. If characters seem too close for the comfort of some viewing adults, kids love having them within touching distance, and nobody goes short of high fives, silly surprises and opportunities to feel part of the action.

In all the on-stage pandemonium, Christmas doesn’t even warrant a mention, but who needs boring old turkey and stuffing, when this cracker’s serving up giant helpings of Green Eggs and Ham.

Seussical The Musical, Southwark Playhouse, Newington Causeway, SE1 6BD. Tickets £14-£25, until 29 December 2018.
