Spread Eagle

Spread Eagle

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. Is your local listed?

What a handsome old pub this fellow is. The sturdy Young's house, just across the road from the former brewery, is all deep browns, burgundies and brass. It's an old, old place — first mentioned in the 17th century, and rebuilt by the Victorians.

Besides its good looks, the Spread Eagle also a splendid all-rounder, with a great food menu (especially the nibbles board), well-kept beers (mostly by Young's) and all the seating space you could ever need. A courtyard provides some al fresco space, perhaps in which to sip one of the numerous cocktails or G&Ts. They even open for breakfast.

There's proper history here, too. As a plaque round the side notes, this was the site of London's first licensed cinema, which opened in 1908.

If you want to stay really late, then the Spread Eagle becomes the Bedspread Eagle (our pun... though they should use it), with 21 boutique hotel rooms upstairs. The hotel bit opened in 2022 after a century's hiatus on the accommodation.
