Sutton's Radio

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

Lewisham town centre has a good pub once again. After the recent demise of the Ravensbourne Arms, the options were few. But now the same chain (Antic) is back with the charismatic Sutton's Radio.

You know it's Antic as soon as you walk in the door. We're greeted with the usual blend of wretched wallpaper, fabric lamp shades and eighth-hand furniture. Those of us old enough to remember the 1970s are transported back to great aunt Margery's sitting room.

Somehow, this formula works time and again. Sutton's is smaller than its defunct predecessor from down the road, but sparkles with cosy character. Out front, a wall-mounted version of Charles Booth's poverty map reminds us of the area's less affluent past.

The drinks choice is decent with five casks and 10 kegs, including some unusual options.

The pub is built into an old radio shack. Vintage sets skulk in the corners where tourist pubs might hang copper jugs and horse brasses. Live music nights and a Sunday quiz complete the picture.
