Diamond are for... well, the foreseeable future, as part of the scheme of the new Farringdon station.

Simon Periton's interior designs for the Crossrail station's western ticket hall take inspiration from the nearby Hatton Garden diamond district. A sequence of enormous gems appears to tumble down and along the interior walls.

The shapes were originally created with intricate paper cut-outs, with the design digitally printed across 45 glass panels lining the station — each up to three metres tall — creating a huge glazed frieze.

The artworks also reflect the diamond-inspired latticework roof for this part of the station, which can be seen from inside and out.

Periton has also been commissioned to design Farringdon's eastern ticket hall, which will mirror from the elaborate Victorian metalwork of Smithfield Market.

The station will open in December 2018, with an expected 82,000 passengers every day.
