Crown and Anchor

Crown and Anchor

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion because we quite like it.

If you're the kind of person who bemoans the transformation of traditional pubs into shiny gastropubs then you should probably steer clear of the Crown and Anchor. If however, you prefer your socialising in a lighter, brighter space with top-notch food and drink, then this place does that very well.

The recent refit sees a swanky dining area out back, with a relaxing drinking area nearest the main doors. Don't be fooled by the dozen antique signs outside for Young & Co., the pub's now in the hands of F&D titans Mitchells & Butlers. An excellent quartet of beers from around London and beyond greet the thirsty. The pub also prides itself on well-chosen wine and unusual spirits. We didn't try the food, but the passing plates had our noses turning like refugees from the 1980s Bisto adverts, and the open kitchen keeps things honest.

Finally, what's with the caged lighting? The Old Pack Horse just down the road has exactly the same fittings?

On Facebook.

Caged lighting seems to be a bit of a trend in these parts.
