Dog And Bell

Dog And Bell

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion by Londonist.

It's hard to walk in this place and not think 'proper old boozer'. It's traditional pub all the way, with beer mats pinned to the wooden bar, the familiar pub carpet of red and gold design, and friendly bar staff who look like they've been in the game all their lives. And, indeed, they have. Charlie and Eileen Gallagher have been running this pub since 1988. Music is provided by a table-top radio set that looks like its been here as long as the Gallaghers. There's even a bar billiards table round the back, an increasingly rare sight.

The Dog and Bell raises itself above other pubs of this type in several ways. First and foremost is the rather special draught ale selection — five or six pumps, mostly unfamiliar — which the gaffer's only too happy to talk you through. You'll also find one of the most mixed clienteles in the area, with long-time locals, Goldsmiths students and the occasional ale-seeking suit all rubbing shoulders. Throw in a small beer garden, a selection of board games and an unlikely out-of-the-way location and you have all the ingredients for a pleasurably memorable night out.

You can read an excellent interview with owner Charlie here.
