King And Queen

King And Queen

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. Is your local listed?

Your present correspondent first visited this pub in 1998, when it was characterised by the smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke, and a cranky old peanut machine that no one ever dared to use. The smells and stains are long gone, yet the place still manages to look traditional, with its clone army of red stools and fine wood panelling.

The King and Queen pub in Fitzrovia

In 1962, the King and Queen played host to Bob Dylan's first performance outside America. A small black and white photo beside the bar records that event, and folk music is still to be enjoyed in the upstairs function room. The main bar, meanwhile, is framed with copious portraits of kings and queens. From it, you can order several interesting and oft-changing ales. Bottled beers include gluten-free options. Food is available, but it's limited and only on week day lunches.
