Prince of Wales

Prince of Wales

This pub was chosen for inclusion by the Londonist editorial team.

Whoever came up with the phrase 'mad as a box of frogs' surely never drank in the Prince of Wales. This eccentric gem on the edge of Clapham's old town deserves the superlative crown when it comes to eccentric interiors. A seat 'reserved for camels' seems to have vanished since our last visit, but we're still intrigued by the squirrel-snake miscreation, the portrait of Kitchener skulking behind a hot water bottle, and the pendent Spiderman presiding over the cosy area to the rear. What can it all mean?

Lord (Kitchener) only knows, but there's no denying the charms of the place. Once settled down with a pint of Harvey's the idiosyncrasies slip into the background. The dim but colourful lighting creates a Plato's cave of half-glimpsed shapes and shadows. It all begins to feel very welcoming, and utterly unlike anything else in Clapham.

This counts as the 'normal' corner.

If you think that looks weird, you should see his arse dangling out in the courtyard.
