Simon The Tanner

Simon The Tanner

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

Simon the Tanner might at first glance seem a bit of a wild-card, situated in a slightly dislocated part of town. However, the rise of nearby Bermondsey Street must have carried this place, too.

This smart pub has a lovely community feel, with a strong beer-focused offering. The rotating beer selection often features London (or near-London) independent breweries, as well as other excellent UK brewers.

The staff seem enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their beer, and can probably help you out if you're having difficulty deciding. The food offering has gone up in the world of late, thanks to the involvement of the Disappearing Dining Club. Dishes such as "cider braised pigs head" and beef Lindström now decorate a menu that was previously more at the fishfinger-sandwich end of the spectrum.

As well as namechecking a saint, Simon the Tanner also references the area's past. These parts of Bermondsey were once well known for the tanning industry, a vocation also alluded to in the nearby Leather Exchange pub — also worth a visit.
