The Avalon

The Avalon

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion by Londonist.

Lurking in the netherworld betwixt Clapham and Balham, this place nevertheless pulls in an appreciative crowd. A big, solid drinking space with a separate dining area for those who must eat — all tastefully ignited by Pre-Raphaellite stylings around the walls depicting scenes from Arthurian legend. Most impressively, it boasts three outdoor spaces — a roadside terrace for people watching, a secluded courtyard to the side, and a large back garden with its own bar.

The beer choice is a wee bit limited, but we were very happy with our £3 pint of Three Cheers, brewed by the pub company. Otherwise, the wine and cocktail lists are both more extensive than in the typical pub.

So successful is the formula that, if things persist, this interstitial neighbourhood will itself become known as Avalon, much as Elephant & Castle got its name from a local hostelry.

Quiz night is Monday.
