The Marlborough

The Marlborough

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

The Marlborough's one of those pubs blessed with comfy leather sofas and armchairs, with tasteful horticultural wallpaper and a handsome dining room. It feels relaxed whether you're there for the superior British cuisine or just for drinks.

Half-way up Richmond hill and set back from the tourist centre, the Marlborough gets more of a local crowd than some of the better known pubs. We found the place initially quiet on a Sunday visit, but bustling by the time we left at 2pm.

First among the many attractions of this Young's pub is the superb and sizeable beer garden, one of the best in London. Even on cold days, the conservatory offers a semblance of al fresco.

The beer selection is competent if nothing special — Young's and a guest ale, but the wine list is excellent, with 13 each of white and red.

The Sunday roasts are truly notable, as you'd hope for the £18-a-pop price tag. Even the vegan nut roast had us salivating — a delicious beetroot-tinted construction with convincing dairy-free cheese draped across the top.

A special mention for the staff who were friendly and attentive throughout our meal.
