The Rose

The Rose

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. Is your local listed?

Dim, candlelit and atmospheric, The Rose looks for all the world like a pub from another era. In their own words, you're greeted by an "intricate oak parquet floor, patron worn copper topped surfaces, elegant chandeliers & an impressive stately backbar, all of which set a definitively traditional tone". While the building's been serving booze for decades, its current look dates back only to 2013. We like. We also like the beer and cider selection, with a treasure trove of little-known brews. Small cocktail and wine lists complete the picture.

The food changes with the seasons, with good options for vegans and veggies (they make a big thing about their "Bermondsey Parmo". All is prepared via the open plan kitchen, which wafts pleasant meaty smells throughout the pub. At the back, you'll find what might just be London's smallest beer garden... actually more of a stable for smokers. The basement toilets, meanwhile, are part of the fun, carpeted with pennies and with an audio version of Great Expectations blaring out on loudspeakers on our visit. Oddness.
