Londonist Speaks To Aunty Donna About Mayors, Theft... And The Word 'Piccadilly'

A warning to anyone who can't abide silliness: Aussie sketch threesome Aunty Donna are currently in London, and they're being pretty silly. Ahead of their shows at the Hammersmith Apollo, Londonist tries to get some sense out of them.

Aunty Donna love nothing more than eating a proper English burger.

Where's the first place you head to when you're in London?

UK Customs at Heathrow Airport. We step off that international flight and head straight to our favourite place in London to see our favourite people and do our favourite thing: nervously answer questions about our planned business activities in the United Kingdom.

And your favourite dish to eat when you're in town?

We all love to sit down at a proper English pub with a proper English pint and down a proper English hamburger.

You can steal one thing from a London museum — what is it?

We know you said one thing but we would love to 'steal' the 6,000-odd Aboriginal Australian items in the British Museum. That would just make our day.

What's the funniest thing a cabbie ever said to you?

Probably 'Piccadilly'. That’s a really funny word and you lot say it all the time like it's nothing.

If you were Mayor of London for the day, what would you do?

We don't know what a Mayor does. We've discussed it and we’re sure a lot of it is ceremonial, but surely there are a lot of meetings to attend. We know next to nothing about infrastructure or recycling or the congestion tax. These are important issues that require thought, care and expertise. The only decision we would feel confident enough to make as Mayor of London would be to stop letting people be Mayor of London for a day. This is no way to run a city!

Which one song for you sums up London?

London Bridge by Fergie aka The Duchess.

What's your top London tip for tourists?

Make fun of London. Londoners have got a great sense of humour and can all take a joke. So go ahead and tease them about silly things like Piccadilly or going on the tube or Brexit. What a bunch of silly gooses.

Who's your favourite Londoner of all time?

Ben. And yes we are talking about that Ben, the big one, that's right — Ben Elton.

And the all important one — your fave tube line?

Piccadilly. What a silly name! And that line goes to Cockfosters which is so funny, and you lot don't even so much as smirk when that lady with the serious voice says it on the PA. Live a little London!
